When the Transformers aired in 1984, who would've suspected we'd be still discussing a show about humanoid robots that can transform into automobiles and aircraft in order to save the earth? However what started off as a Saturday morning kid's cartoon ballooned into a multi-million dollar business over the years. You may point out that the success of Transformers may be traced through the evolution of the franchise's most recognizable character, Optimus Prime.

Prime In The Beginning

Action figures are nothing recent to the gadget market, and there is little indication these days of the trend slowing down any time soon. Optimus Prime toys and other items along those lines, have persisted to stay a staple in the toy boxes and Christmas dream lists of little boys since the early 80s.

The original Optimus Prime action figure included a unique trailer to hitch on to it whenever Prime was in his truck mode. Pre-Millennium Prime

Transformers began to change during the 90s after having a decade-long run at the head of the group. Should you look back at the Optimus Prime products, this change becomes subtle yet noticeable. The action figures themselves began to sell as non-transformable gadgets strangely enough. Several came with gear like battle platforms and other features, literally. One version of Prime in 1993 added an LED pulsating fist.

Prime also went through what you might refer to as a remodel in the early 90s. One type of toys changed the leader of the Autobot's standard red, white and blue look in favor of a red-black paint job. The change turned out to be brief however because by this time Prime's picture had become synonymous with the Transformers franchise. The series would even spin off different off shoots of different transformers so that they can keep up with the changing times and capture brand-new viewers.

Prime According to Hollywood

Michael Bay's reinvention of the Transformers series came out in 2007, initiating yet another generation of youth to the adventures of Prime and his Autobots vs Megatron and also the devious Decepticons. Other transformers might have transformed their shapes, but Prime remained essentially the same Prime that survived the test of time. Other Autobots progressed into the most recent designs of sports and utility vehicles, but Bay's Prime retained his big rig transforming same at it has been since the 80s, albeit with the latest CGI special effects.
