Many of us are familiar with festoon lights - strings lights used around the holidays. They highlight outdoor venues, like circuses, and bistro patios and gatherings under tents. They are surely low cost, and practical.
Strings lights came to attention as permanent lighting effects for the screened veranda in the house we were building. They would be perfect with this relaxed, industrial style house. String lights are typically not the same thing as low voltage cable lights, which are not designed for outdoors, and can be more expensive than ten times as much.
String lights are simple to install: While doing the electrical wiring phase, three outlets were installed on top of the wall at intervals across room or space. The outlets were connected to a switch, so the light bulbs could be turned on quickly. During the finishing level, common wire was connected to eye screws in the walls. At one end, the eye screws are close to the outlets, so that the light string will be plugged in. Three strands of medium gauge wire were linked to the eye screws and dragged tight across the area.
We initially tried a package of little mini lights on one of any wires, but did not like the wrapped green electric wire that came with lights. It was too obvious. So we took those back and got three boxes of standard bulb Xmas lights. These came with more simple electric wire and bigger bulbs. They were called C-7's. You can buy C-9's if you want bigger bulbs. There are various bulb shapes and sizes from which to choose, all the way up to regular sized bulbs.
Each bulb bears a little clip in order that it can be hung on the cord. We spaced the light bulbs out, and then pulled the strand tight. This type of light strand can be take off, so there was no excess at the end. When the strand is trim, you will need some black electrician's tape to seal the end.
As soon as the light strings are already turned on we had a pleasant surprise. The illumination was beautifully diffused throughout the room. It turned out to be so soft and diffused that it looked as if moonlight. Strings of small lights have a distinct ambiance - they remind us of parties and festive moments. It was entertaining to re-interpret this particular familiar lighting fashion for everyday use.
